The line from Harbin through Hailar to the Russian border at Manzhouli formed the original Trans-Siberian route. It was very busy with freight traffic from oilfields and collieries that abound in this area of Inner Mongolia. Although diesels had taken over the main passenger trains everything else was still steam hauled in 1992.
