The kilns at Littlemill are a product of the railway age having been developed to serve a market over a wide area using rail to distribute the product. Lying adjacent to the Morpeth to Tweedmouth railway (now the East Coast main line) which opened in 1847 a large commercial kiln was soon built. A little later an even larger bank of kilns was built and these remain as a fine and impressive example of a nineteenth century limeworks.
